weird and wonderful
weird and wonderful
Weird and wonderful is the next topic and it is about being creative and thinking outside the box it is also about unreal pictures and using Photoshop to make them more appealing. Weird and wonderful is about making people confused and not understanding the image you can put objects in places they aren't meant to be like a fish under a town.
statement of intent
For my weird and wonderful topic I am going to focus on the topics Illusions and mirrors, I really like the idea of reflections as there is a lot to play around with and a lot to edit with photos of reflections. I am going to show this by using different landscapes and using different locations to take the pictures, for example I might find a place that has a natural reflection like a river in front of a building and I may find a angle at which I can use a mirror to make something weird like grass in a persons body. For my initial research I will look for places that I can use with reflections. I will need to find a place where I can take photos using natural reflections, I will also need a place where I can use a mirror but before I start taking photos I need to find some inspiration for example a photographer who also takes pictures using mirrors from their I can use their photos as ideas and I can develop from their to make my photos better and to the highest standard they can be. To show progression I will show my first set of pictures and from their I will try to edit my previous pictures using Photoshop or even take better pictures naturally. Also to show progression I can do a best and worst photo at the end of each photo shoot and comment on where I went wrong, this will help me in the next photo shoot I do as I will know where I went wrong last time and make sure I improve in those areas. To experiment I will try new locations and try different landscapes also I originally plan on using mid point shots but if the photos aren't to the best of my ability I will change the viewpoint and experiment with other camera angles. So far I have learnt about different camera angles to take shots at and this will help me when I am experimenting with new shots. Another thing I have learnt about are some photographers who take shots with mirrors, this will help to give me inspiration and develop my ideas. I feel as though the topic of mirrors is not enough for this topic so I may start with a different idea which I will do some research for, To help me I will start with a mind map of ideas.
surrealist artists
Rene magritte
In the painting I am analyzing ,the colours he has used are black, grey and green. The thing that makes this painting special and the reason I like it is because it is a man holding a newspaper with a drawing on it which links in with the background so it looks like we can see through the man.The main point of focus is around the middle because that's where the artist wants the viewers attention to be since that is the newspapers area.Looking at this picture it makes you feel calm since thee is not a lot going on in the painting, because nothing is going on you feel calm. This picture is good because it looks good and the audience look at it twice to see what is actually going on.The colours that Rene Magritte has used also make the picture make you feel calm.Overall I like this painting and it links in with the painting I want to take.In this painting I can see some long trees in the background which are full of life. It is quite confusing and brilliant at the same time. This painting looks quite symmetrical as the trees are on either side. To a person who could not see this painting I would there is a man holding a magazine which blends in to the background to make it seem like one whole picture.
SAlvador dali
To describe this picture I would use the words weird and wonderful. This painting reminds of something for Alice in a wonderland it's very weird and makes no sense at all which is a lot like Alice In a wonderland. The idea of a melting clock is very new to me it's almost like saying time is fading away. In real life you wouldn't see a clock melting so that is a big factor which makes this photo weird and wonderful. The thing that interests me most about this painting is the idea of time fading away which is represented by the clock melting. This image is weird and wonderful because it is creative and doesn't reflect any other paintings we see today. In this image I can see a clock that is breaking, it looks like the clock is almost melting off the table. The numbers are sliding off the clock and so are gold framing around the clock. It is is unique and it is good to look at. In my opinion this picture is confusing and it is really odd.

BEN HEINE
The photos above with someone holding the drawings are Ben Heine's photos and I want my first photo shoot to be in his style.Ben Heine is a Belgian artist. He is the creator of the pencil vs camera concept which was created in 2010.The images in this series are usually the the photos show a hand drawn sketch in an ordinary scene.
This is one of my favorite pictures that Ben Heine has taken. In this photo it looks like the volcano is on the bottom left power spot which makes it more effective, the exposure in this photo is also perfect because everything is visible and nothing is too dark or too bright. This shot looks like a close up on the hand which is effective because then you can see what is happening in the photo. In this photo the main colour looks like blue it doesn't really stand out but you can see a lot of it in the background,I think the yellow in this photo stands out because you can see it in the bottom right corner and it is really bright.I think the depth of field would be medium because the volcano looks blurred but the hand looks clear. The background shot of the volcano is taken outdoors. To make up this photo you would need to take two photos first you would need one of the volcano then you would need a photo of someone holding the picture, then you would go on photo shop and add the photo of the hand after editing it and line it up properly. In this image you can see a yellow taxi, a volcano, a hand and you can see a picture of the world map.The lighting in this photo is perfect because there isn't anything too dark or too bright although the yellow stands out a bit too much the photo still looks perfect. In my opinion this photo is really good it may require a lot of thinking but it still is worth it in the end.
first paper shoot
For my first shoot I am going to start with something simple.
USing paper over an object
second shoot
best photo
Christopher mckenney
Christopher McKenney's topic is Surrealism his photos are really good
This photo is my favorite to begin with the exposure in this photo is perfect, it is a full shot but it looks like it has been cropped the colours around the chair are dark and because of that the white chair stands out.The depth of field in this photo would be mid range since everything not everything is not visible, the shot looks like it was taken in the forest and to set this up you would have to have someone standing behind a chair holding a mirror I think you would need someone in front of the camera so you can see the reflection in the mirror, when you do this it looks like there is a mirror inside a mirror inside a mirror and the cycle keeps on going like that this is one of the reasons I like this persons photos. The lighting is setup so that is on the chair because that is where the photographer wants the audiences attention to be. In my opinion I really, really like this photo because it makes the audience look at the photo twice it sums up the weird and wonderful topic really well.
erik johansson
Out of Erik Johansson's photos I really like the photo above. The shot above is a full shot because you can see everything in the photo and you can see his full body.In this photo the main colour would be grey because the water looks kind of grayish and you can see that the photographer has thought about the colour because the person standing in the boat doesn't stand out in fact he blends in with the water which is really good because the viewers eye isn't attracted to on place in the picture. The depth of field would be deep because you can see all the way in the back (the trees) using a deep depth of field is really good because if I was taking this photo I would want the viewer to see everything. This shot was taken outside in a lake to set this up you would need a canoe and you would need to be in a lake. The lighting in this photo is perfect in most places because in the top right it kind of looks too bright which the photographer kind of benefits from.In the image I can see a lake which looks like it has been broken because it looks like lots of shards of a mirror with the reflection of the sky. In my opinion the photo is really good I would love to do this as one of my photo shoots because I find that a photo with mirrors can never turn out wrong because it will always look good.
daniel kukla
Daniel Kukla is a photographer that uses mirrors and he contrasts two different things like in the photo above around the mirror is dark but in the mirror is a bright sunset,Something I admire about this is that it's a really creative way to focus the viewers attention on one spot in the photo. Daniel Kukla has also inspired me to use mirrors in my photo shoots,I have decided to combine mirrors and surrealism together so that I can fit them both under the topic of weird and wonderful. Daniel Kukla has created something called the edge effect which can be seen in the photo above all he uses is a mirror and a painter's easel and what he does is capture opposing elements within the environment, Which I think is an amazing idea and the results with this idea are incredible, this inspires me to take breathtaking photos as well.
planning my first shoot
The theme for my first shoot is going to be illusions. The photographer that has inspired me to do this is Christopher McKenney. In my first photo shoot I am going to use mirrors and it is one photo in particular that Christopher McKenney took that has inspired me to do this. For this photo shoot I am going to need a person to hold the mirror. I will need a location that has a clear background most likely outside of school. In the end I want a photo that makes it look like I can see through someones body.

Mobile photos
I liked the idea of reflections so I went Salford and decided to take my own photos.I saw the reflections in the water and thought it would look good in the photo. I also decided that after editing the photos it would look good if I brought out the colours of the buildings more. The idea of reflections really appealed to me as I really like taking pictures using water and I researched the topic and once I saw what could be done after editing a photo of a reflections the topic appealed to me even more.

idris khan
Born 1978. Idris khan is a artist based in London. He takes a photo and puts lots of the same photo in different places as you can see below. Idris Khan explores memory, creativity and layering of experience. He is well known for his large-scale work using the technique of layering.
Half way through weird and wonderful I have decided to research a new artist,Idris Khan
Idris Khan works by using Photoshop and he works in layering and changing the opacity of photos. I really like his photos so I am going to try doing an edit like he does it.

Idris khan style edit
To edit this photo what I have done is take the same photo and put it over the original picture but each time I have lowered the opacity.
small world
The next topic that I found to be interesting was the small world photography.I like the idea of turning a photo into a small globe and I want to take a photo which looks good as a small world.
I had some photos that I took when I went London and I put them on Photoshop.
Time lapse app
I found a app for free that I can download on to my phone which allows me to create a time lapse and create slow motion videos which will help me improve my work.
final shoot
For my final shoot I am going to work on creating a moving image where only a certain part of an image moves this is called cinematography. For this I am going to have to use Photoshop and a GIF maker on my iPad, I will first need a video of a certain action e.g. Pouring water in a glass, someone jumping. I will then need a photo from the exact same position of the video, which I will have to use a tripod. Then I will need to put the video in the GIF maker app and turn it into a GIF. After that I will put the photo first in Photoshop then the GIF on top in the exact position and edit to look like it is in the same image and I will have the photo done.
This Is a long process so I will have to take a few things into consideration like the background as I don't want the viewers attention on the background I want is on the GIF, I will have to have the right lighting not too dark or too bright, the photo to go with the GIF will have to be still clear and in the exact position the video was taken from.

gif creater app
I have found another app which will allow me to create a gif which I can then put in to photoshop and turn into a image. This app can allow me to work at home and not just school as I can try different ideas and see which ones I like. This app is free and once I download it I can use it on the go or wherever I am.
Moving image (GIF)
For my final shoot I decided to take some images and turn them into a moving image. I decided to use the hose in the back garden and I took lots of photos of me using it from the same place which I then put into Photoshop and turned into a moving image.

Evaluation
During the weird and wonderful topic I have researched a lot of artists but one that stood out was Christopher McKenney because he inspired me to take photos using mirrors. I found him by researching weird and wonderful surreal artists and I have learnt how to use mirrors in a photo. I started off looking at illusions which led me to my work with mirrors and my work with paper over a real object I then went on to edit a photo in Idris khan style,I went to Salford and took a few landscape photos and then put them in Photoshop and layered them so they look like Idris Khans photos. After that I decided to explore the small world and the GIF topics.I started off doing surrealism and using mirrors I really liked the idea of mirrors but I then went on to look a reflections and Photoshop and I ended my topic off with photo shop and moving images. Throughout the weird and wonderful topic I feel like I have improved my composition.
Overall, I feel like the small world topic has allowed me to expand my skills in Photoshop and has allowed me to understand how to analyse a photo or painting better than before through this topic I have learnt about new and amazing photographers and artists which has helped me understand new concepts and ideas.
